Dear Parish Priests, Priest Moderators, Pastoral Directors and Pastoral Associates,
The value of a loving, stable marriage and the gifts which it brings to family and community is immeasurable. Not only does the couple themselves flourish within a Christ centered marriage, but the children and families surrounding the couple reap the benefits also.
One of the great tragedies in our society today is the breakdown of marriage and home; loving, stable marriages don't attract a lot of attention from church and community organisations until they become unstable.
The opportunities to recognise and nurture the strength of marriage are vitally important and should be grasped with vitality.
In recent years, St Valentine's Day has become increasingly secularised. 'Saint' has been dropped from the title and the emphasis has shifted from romantic love in the context of life-long marriage, to romantic relationships of any persuasion.
Enclosed you will find materials providing you with the opportunity to advocate the sacred bond of marriage, to capture the joyfulness of the Feast of St Valentine and to nurture the marriages and families within your parish and community.
Please use the resources enclosed to focus parish attention on the role of marriage and St Valentine's Day.
Yours sincerely,
Philip Wilson DD JCL
Archbishop of Adelaide
