Youth gather for Pentecost Vigil

More than 100 young people came together on the June long weekend to celebrate the Pentecost Vigil at The Monastery.

The event began with a pilgrimage from the Cathedral to The Monastery with 17 participants. Pilgrims made stops at the site of the first Catholic Mass in SA on East Terrace and at St Raphael’s in Parkside.

Along the way, pilgrims reflected on Christus Vivit, Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation to young people.

The celebration at the Monastery included soccer on the oval, performances from local youth music groups (Jesus Youth, Seaside Worship and the Pooraka Vietnamese Community Youth Band).

Mass was celebrated with the parish community and included young people leading music, prayers, and other ministries.

After the homily, Holly Roberts offered a youth Gospel reflection tying in key elements from Christus Vivit.

The community gave Holly a blessing for her journey to the International Youth Forum in Rome. After Mass the community was invited outside to eat at the food trucks and listen to performances at the ‘open mic’.

The night concluded with an evening program featuring Awaken Youth (Adelaide Hills parish) and Taize led by the Marist Youth Ministry.

“It was a full night,” said Peter Bierer, coordinator of the Catholic Office for Youth and Young Adults.

“Overall it was a very successful event.”
